Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are all the different mapping formats? Angular (light probe), Latitude/Longitude, Mirrored Ball, etc...
A: These are different formats (panoramic transformations) accepted by various applications and plugins. They can also be a matter of personal preference to obtain different lighting results.
Q: I am getting artifacts with my renderings using HDRs.
A: This is common to all HDRs if used improperly. Try turning up your sampling/subdivisions and/or use higher quality render settings. Also make sure your mapping type is set correctly to the proper format you are using.
Q: There are no instructions as to how to use these HDRs in my scene. Can you describe the setup process?
A: As much as we'd like to, there are too many applications to go into detail. A simple Google search with your 'application name' and 'HDR' should turn up many useful results. Also check your application help files for more information.
Q: What other tools can I use to change format shapes, blur the HDRs, and alter sizes?
A: There are several tools on the market:
HDRShop is free for private use and probably the most popular HDR editor.
HDRIE is an open source editor still under development.
Photoshop CS2 has the built-in capabilities to read and edit HDR and OpenEXR, and even apply some filters but remains very limited. This currently lacks the ability to perform panoramic transformations.
Idruna Photogenics is another tool which is available for purchase.
